Problem to be Solved:

Which contact lens solution will sterilize bacteria the best?

Hypothesis:

Generic brand names will sterilize the same amount of bacteria as the brand names because generic brand names are made up of the same type of materials as brand names.

Variables:

CVS Multi-Purpose
Solo-Care Multi-Purpose
Complete Moisture Multi-Purpose
Renu Multi-purpose

Tested on:
Staphylococcus epidermis (non-pathogenic)
Streptococcus salivarius (non-pathogenic)

Procedure:

Fill a 100-mm petri dish with the agar suitable for the bacteria that is being used. Cover the dish with the bacteria and let the bacteria grow for two days. Then dip a one-centimeter square piece of filter paper in one of the four contact lens solutions and place it around the outside edge of the dish. Repeat this for the other three contact lens solutions. One of the filter papers does not have any contact lens solution and one filter paper has bleach on it. Let the dish sit for three days, then lift the filter paper up with sterile tweezers and estimate the amount of bacteria that has gone away. Repeat these steps for the other bacteria.

Results:

Each contact lens solution on filter paper was equally effective on average at eliminating bacteria under the paper in each of the petri dishes with Staphylococcus epidermis and Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria.  All four contact lens solutions on filter paper eliminated more bacteria than the filter paper with no disinfectant, and eliminated less bacteria than the filter paper with bleach.

The filter paper with bleach was about 90% effective on average at eliminating bacteria under the paper in the petri dishes with Staphylococcus epidermis and Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria.
The filter paper with no disinfectant was about 10% effective on average at eliminating bacteria under the paper in the petri dishes with Staphylococcus epidermis and Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria.


Conclusion:

My hypothesis was correct. The generic brands of contact lens solution was just as effective in sterilizing the bacteria as the name brands. Renu Multi-purpose contact lens solution is a very popular brand of contact lens solution. However, it did not do as well as the other brands. If I were to do my project over again I would find a way to measure the bacteria loss more accurately because my experiment was estimated in the amount of bacteria loss. It was not my original plan to estimate the amount of bacteria the had gone away. I expected the bacteria to move away from the filter paper so I would be able to measure it with a ruler but it did not. In some of the dishes, unknown organisms grew, so the dishes were disposed of properly.

The only way to get the dirt and germs off the contact lens is to clean them by using contact lens solution. The only way you can get sin out of your life is by asking Jesus to wash it away with His blood.
